Director of Innovation & Commercialization

We are looking for a motivated and experienced individual with experience in life science technology commercialization and entrepreneurship. The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical and project management skills; an autonomous work ethic; initiative; and the ability to lead in an entrepreneurial, team-oriented environment. Experience in technology entrepreneurship, performing market analysis and developing business plans, experience in scientific research or engineering, project and team management, event planning, marketing, an understanding of regulatory approval processes and federal grants, and (patent) law is required as is a scientific background. The Director of Technology Commercialization will report to the New Orleans BioInnovation Center President and will oversee a team of Technology Commercialization Fellows and part-time interns and externs. The Director will have extensive interface with local researchers, research development facilitators at local academic institutions (LSU Health Sciences Center, Tulane University, UNO, Xavier University), entrepreneurs, investors, and other members of the life science and biotech community.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year

Job Duties

  • Hold meetings with researchers, inventors, and local entrepreneurs to identify promising new technologies
  • Identifying relevant projects with Center client companies and entrepreneurs and understanding needs and methods of most effective assistance for the clients, ability to prioritize projects and work within deadlines of clients
  • Manage Technology Commercialization Fellows, Communications and Event team and part-time commercialization interns and externs
  • Oversee projects by providing guidance to the team on market research, competitive analyses, and business plan writing projects identified by you
  • Develop business plans, market summaries, and commercialization strategies for technologies
  • Assist startups in protecting their intellectual property, raising early-stage capital, applying for grants, and launching new technologies and products into the marketplace.
  • Develop annual seminar series to educate the community about technology commercialization issues
  • Develop annual conference, Innovation Louisiana, including two days of educational programs, a BioChallenge pitch competition, and a University Technology Showcase event
  • Oversee the Center’s marketing and social media strategy
  • Present on behalf of the BioInnovation Center and the Commercialization program to local and regional Universities, healthcare institutions, and others
  • Help companies attain federal and foundation grants and investment funds
  • Identify relevant grants sources for Center
  • Manage multiple grants and sponsors
  • Track growth of client companies and report progress periodically to Center President and Board
  • Other tasks as needed

Skills, Experience, and Requirements

Entrepreneurial and professional with leadership skills (motivated, on time, strong work ethic)
At least 2 years of experience in:

  • professional writing; business plans and/or market analyses
  • strategic planning; researching customers, market sizing analysis
  • Developing, writing and executing federal or foundation grants
  • Medical technology regulatory approvals
  • Patents and other intellectual property
  • Planning events
  • Public speaking
  • Managing teams and balancing multiple projects
  • Strong understanding of bioscience research—(under)graduate background and/or experience in chemistry, biology, engineering or related field preferred
  • Graduate or professional degree completed: health sciences, public health, engineering, business or law preferred
